World Suicide Prevention Day 2026

World Suicide Prevention Day is observed on September 10 under the theme “Changing the Narrative on Suicide: Start the Conversation.”

With more than 720,000 lives lost to suicide each year — 77% of them in low and middle-income countries. In Zimbabwe, suicide accounts for approximately 1.8% of all deaths, with the country ranking among the highest suicide rates in Africa at around 23.6 per 100,000 people. Police statistics indicate that 2,058 men and 505 women died by suicide between 2015 and 2019, highlighting the particular vulnerability of men.

The day reminds us that simple actions like asking someone how they really are, listening without judgment, and encouraging professional help can save lives.

Ultimately, suicide prevention is everyone’s responsibility—not just on September 10, but every day of the year. #WorldSuicidePrevention Day
